Sorry, France (and sorry, Charles) …
Renaud Favier – February 25th, 2015
In a nutshell : a place somewhere in Orthodox Catholic East-Central Europe (not far from the famous “Balkans”) is called “Ukraine” (formerly part of Soviet Union) ; the place East of Ukraine (and West of Alaska, North of Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, China …) is called “Russia” (formerly heartland of Soviet Union) ; a place with sandy beaches and a good harbour somewhere South of both Ukraine and Russia (not enormously far from the skiing resort Sochi) is called “Crimea” (formerly part of Russia, then of Soviet Union, then of Ukraine, now of Russia again).
Ukraine says Crimea belongs to Ukraine, like California or Louisiane belong to the USA (since they were taken over and/or bought from Mexico and France by the people who had taken over America from the Brits and Native Indians), or Greece belongs to Europe.
Russia says Ukraine is like Panama or England, and Crimea is like Alaska or Hawaï, but they don’t mind about Alaska and Hawaï, and don’t ask Panama or England to be really independant. Yet.
Lots of people talk, twit and post about it.
There was a vote, in Crimea, and over 90% of local citizens said they wanted to (re)become Russians, rather than stay Ukrainians.
That’s (not increased) reality.
Some walk their talk.
Now, the game seems to be over (and Russia won this one).
Not everybody outside of Crimea (and Russia) seems 100% happy about it all (by the way, it seems some people in Eastern Ukraine are jealous and would also like to be Russians …), but who knows what’s Diplomacy and what’s reality ?
Anyway, that’s the way it is, there (in Europe) and now.
In a nutshell, it’s like a football game : some players win (and usually, the Germans), some lose (not always the same), trainers and managers call their lawyers, supporters shout, journalists talk, so called “experts” sell their comments at tv shows, twittos twit, facebookers post, activists walk in the streets, politicians talk among politicians and on TV, but nobody can do nothing but laugh, cry, shout, put their flags back in the garage, and go back to work or watch something else on Google’s Youtube, Apple TV, or Netflix, when the game, Olympic or not, is over.
Good game (and good luck), Ukraine.
Good game (and good luck), Europe & Co.
Good joke (and good luck), Brussels !
Good luck, Brave New World, and good luck, citizens of here and now.
The trouble is, from a Western viewpoint (China, which incidentally took over Hong-Kong and Macao in the recent past without much noise in the West, doesn’t seem to care that much, as it is busy with it’s own real economic, environmental, social, politic and other issues), there’s plenty of communists and other nasty people, plus gas, oil, unemployment, social unrest and religion turmoil around …
But the game is over in Crimea, let’s play and watch another one.
What, who, where next ?
More about it (and other issues) in French (but with pictures & internet links) : http://cestalire.wordpress.com/2014/01/21/un-e-cafe-suspendu-au-hasard/
Many people died in Kiev. It’s not a “wag the dog” story, but a dangerous mix of “civil” and economic war. The big guys in and around Ukraine have played strange, wicked games, over the last months, or years. Ukrainians pay a high price.
Less dramatic, if not good, news about “good old shoes” in Europe (in French) : http://renaudfavier.com/2014/02/21/ff-genres-baskets-charentaises-godillots-tongs-gros-sabots-et-autres-francaises-a-cote-de-leurs-pompes/
Hollande is at work (or so he pretends and some of his family and friends pretend to believe to make him happy).
France is not.
Hollande is at (economic) war (or so he, many of his fans, and a few of his ministers believe).
France is no longer at whatever war (was it ever since Trafalgar ?).
Hollande has an arguably good sense of humour (though basically oldschool male chauvinistic, from Corrèze, with a 70’s touch, as he was a student then).
Most of the French have an arguably a disastrous XXIst century style sense of humour, whatever their geographic origin, favourit gender, or political bias.
Hollande is an absolute loser, of course …
Bur France cannot always win (good rugby game, England, but have a nice week-end watching other naked bottoms shows on British TV) …
Nobody’s perfect (especially current French President François Hollande) …
Is France killing art and passion ? Fighting against its own artists and talented people ? Read more about it here : http://renaudfavier.com/2013/01/16/si-armstrong-balance-a-la-tv-faudra-til-delocaliser-le-tour-de-france-comme-depardieu-renault-ou-le-dakar/
Bonus : but it looks like it, doesn’t it ?
